MERCHANT FAQs

Is My Personal & Payment Information Secure?

Special care and attention is given to protecting the privacy of both your personal information and your payment information. The first line of defense is how you access your information. A USERID and PASSWORD are required to set-up and access your account information. Naturally it is in your best interest not to divulge these essential codes to anyone you don't want to have access to your data. When you enter the data, it is protected from viewing, by unauthorized persons, using Secure Socket Layers (SSL), network Firewalls (both hardware and software) and other state-of-the-art data security methods. If you are idle for 20 minutes without editing any information, the system will time out. This is a method to help prevent unauthorized persons from viewing your data on your monitor while you are away. Of course the recommended method is for you to log-out before leaving your computer.

How Does the UniPay eCommerce System Know Who I Am?

No doubt that you have heard of cookies. Well, when you register and authorize us to place a cookie ( a harmless identifier) on your machine, that cookie has a unique tag that allows us to identify it and you whenever you visit any UniPay enabled site. The cookie does not contain any personal information, it simply allows our system to identify anyone registered who is requesting a page (web site view) . You may configure some browsers to warn you before a site sends a cookie.

Encryption, What is it?

By my definition it is a process by which the original information is transformed (encoded) into something that is unrecognizable as the original and must be unencrypted (or decoded) to provide the original content. In simple terms, an encryption code is established, say that the letter "A" is now a "D", a "B" is an "R", etc.. A pair of keys (coincidentally is called a Key Pair) is issued to both the transmitting and receiving ends. So, a message encrypted at the transmitting end can be decrypted correctly at the receiving end.

How Do I Know That My Information is Encrypted?

We use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), the current industry standard for securing transmissions over the Internet. SSL is also supported by the two most popular browsers, Microsoft's Internet Explorer (2.0 and above) and Netscape Navigator (1.1 and above). If the web address/URL begins with HTTPS:// it tells you that it is being hosted on a secured connection. The browser you are using may have an icon displayed that indicates this to you in the form of a padlock or a doorkey. If the padlock is open or the doorkey is broken then the connection is NOT secure.

Is SSL Secure?

The simple answer is yes! Keys of varying lengths are used to enhance the encryption and decrease the likelihood of unauthorized code breaking. The larger the length of the key, the greater the total number of iterations possible to use for encryption. Today's browsers usually have either 40-bit or 128-bit encryption. A message using 128-bit encryption key is 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times harder to break than a 40-bit key encrypted message or if you like to think of it this way, it would take 1 trillion trillion years to crack a 128-bit key message IF you were good at it. I prefer my odds at winning the lottery. We will always provide you with the maximum level of encryption supported by your browser. You are strongly encouraged to obtain a browser that supports 128-bit encryption.

Tips on Preventing E-Fraud

What you need to know

In the world of E-commerce, convenience translates to accepting payment online for goods and services. The increased risk for chargebacks and fraud is inherent with the situation, more so than with face-to-face transactions because no signature is required. The industry term for taking a credit card over the telephone, over the Internet or via mail is "card not present". The "authorization" that you receive when you present or submit the credit card for payment only verifies that the account is open and has a sufficient "open to buy" limit for the amount requested. The authorization does not guarantee that the transaction was completed by a legitimate cardholder.

As a merchant, you are responsible for fraudulent charges made to credit cards for merchandise bought from your web site. Make sure you carefully read and understand your credit card contract with your credit card processing agent and bank. If you have any questions, consult an attorney. How do you protect yourself? Credit Card Fraud Insurance is one way - a very expensive way. Another way is to purchase one of the available fraud detection tools. Their methods involve everything from artificial intelligence to neural network technology and the prices range from $10,000 to $500,000. One of the best ways we know of is to have an Address Verification Service (AVS) check performed on each transaction. Sure, it costs you a little more, but it is cheaper than insurance or fraud detection tools and worth it.

Here are just a few basic tips that just might save you some money:

Use E-Fraud Screening Tools provided by your E-Commerce provider to perform risk management.
Use AVS when available.
Consider using CVV2 (Card Verification Value 2) to validate that a valid Visa card is in the purchaser's possession.
For large orders, ship only to the registered address of the credit card holder. You set the dollar benchmark as to when this must be done. Remember that you will be charged for the full amount if the credit card order is fraudulent.
Consider delaying the shipment of a large dollar order until you can obtain a physical signature of the card holder.
Don't accept an order unless the order form is completely filled out.
Check e-mail addresses carefully. If you make it mandatory for an e-mail address to be entered, a "red flag" should be raised any time a customer provides a free e-mail address.
Be skeptical about items that the customer wants shipped to a PO Box - red flag.
Call local information to verify telephone numbers or use Internet resources, if you can't get a match - red flag.
Be alert for larger than normal orders - red flag.
Look for multiple orders from the same customer using several different credit cards - red flag.
Screen requests for rush deliveries that have one or more "red flags" associated with them.
Remember you have the right to refuse shipment of any order if you cannot verify the payment information. Be sure to include a statement like that on your "policy page" in your web site.

While eliminating credit card fraud is the hope of us all, we acknowledge that it is not going to be fool proof. However, you can increase the odds in your favor by using AVS and putting the above tips into practice in your daily activities.
